Pikes Peak Hillclimb

Pikes Peak Hillclimb is the second oldest motorsport event in the United States and dates back to 1916. It consists of a 156 turn, 12.4 mile climb up the spectacular Pikes Peak. The course starts at a height of 9,390ft and climbs to the summit which is 14,110ft. The course consists of a mixture of smooth packed gravel and seal , with approximately 6 miles of each, although more and more is being sealed each year. As the competitors climb towards the summit, their cars will loose 30% of their horsepower due to the thin air and drivers have to be able to cope with the atmospheric conditions as well.

Each year entrants from all over the world take on the mighty mountain in the "Race to the Clouds". Last year Nobuhiro (Monster) Tajima in his highly modified Suzuki became the first person to break the famous 10 minute barrier with a time of 9 min 51.278 sec. Rhys Millen finished second in the Unlimited division in his Hyundai with a very respectable time of 10 min 09.242 sec.

Competitors tackle the mountain in all sorts of vehicles in a number of classes. There are always a good number of bikes competing in various classes. Pikes Peak has always attracted a number of highly modified machines such as the one below. Last year the race was postponed due to the terrible wild fires that were burning through Colorado when it was about to be held. The 2013 event was held recently, the first time since the road has been fully sealed, and Sebastian Loeb completely smashed the old record to win the event in a time of 8 min 13.878 sec, a minute and a half under the old record.
